This is the workbook of Volume 10 of the entire set of 12 volumes of word problems solving strategies. If you want to set a solid foundation in math, grasping the techniques on solving word problems is the key to it. This set of books teaches you the techniques and strategies you need to solve word problems. Sample question in this volume: In a math contest, among first place, second place, and third place winners, 2/5 of them got first or second places; 9/10 of them got second or third places. What fractional part of the winners got second place? Reasoning and solution: In the question, we need to deal with only fractional parts so all the winners are in 1 (whole/all). From "2/5 of them got first or second places," we deduct the fractional part that first or second place winners are in, 2/5, from 1, to find the fractional part that third place winners are in: 1-2/5 =3/5 From "9/10 of them got second or third places," we deduct the fractional part that second or third place winners are in, 9/10, to find the fractional part that first place winners are in: 1- 9/10 =1/10 Now we know that third place winners are in the fractional part of 3/5 and that first place winners are in the fractional part of 1/10 so we deduct these two fractional parts from 1, to find the fractional part that second place winners are in: 1-3/5-1/10= 10/10-6/10-1/10=3/10 Second place winners are 3/10 of all the winners. The techniques and strategies on finding the average amount and on using formulas to find the surface area and volume of rectangular solids and cubes are also covered in this volume.
