Beskrivelse
D. Wicke has assembled published as well as several hitherto unpublished pyx-like vessels made from ivory, stone, various metals and other materials. The author uses the term "pyx" to define vessels covered by a lid. The vessels have been excavated in or have been ascribed to North Syria, Levant, Assyria, Elam, and Urartu and have been dated to the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Age. Their form, their usage and the icononography of their decoration are in the focus of the analysis. A comprehensive catalogue and several hundred illustrations distributed on more than 100 plates enable the reader to follow the author's way of reasoning.
