Meal time passed in a flood of innocent gaiety; and though the old saloon might in its day have resounded with many scenes of disbandment and wider celebrations, I doubt it ever knew a more honest and heartfelt enjoyment. How easy it is for a benevolent being to spread pleasure around him; and how a kind heart is truly a source of joy, making all around cool with a smile! The worthy squire's good humor was quite contagious; he himself was happy and ready to make the whole world happy, and the little eccentricities of his humor only spiced up the sweetness of his philanthropy.
The Christmas Dinner :
This play is intended, not only for acting but also for reading. It is so arranged that boys and girls can read it to themselves, just as they would read any other story. Even the stage directions and the descriptions of scenery are presented as a part of the narrative. At the same time, by the use of different styles of type, the speeches of the characters are clearly distinguished from the rest of the text, an arrangement which will be found convenient when parts are being memorized for acting.
