A woman walked toward him as he sat in a small island of shade beneath an acacia tree.
Her clothes rustled in the wind as she approached cautiously. Her slow, deliberate footsteps crunched on the sand, marking her distance with each step.
The wind swept across the desert in green, undulating lines, but when the wind struck her, it changed direction and speed abruptly. This disruption allowed Andrew to "see" her in his mind.
She spoke to him in Arabic. When he didn't answer she spoke in a broken English. "You are not spirit?"
"No."
"Soldier?" she asked.
"No."
"You look like soldier."
"Well, I took these clothes off a psychopath that fancied himself something of a soldier. But I am no soldier." Andrew shook his head.
"Spy?"
"A blind spy?" He asked, pointing to the dirty bandage around his eyes. "I'm afraid I wouldn't make a very good one. Doctor."
She stood quietly, the wind rustling her long robes and head scarf. She sighed heavily as she stared down at him.
"Medicine doctor?" she asked, there was an edge of excitement in her voice, but it faded quickly. "Who cannot see?"
"Yes."
There was a long pause while she stood before him, the weight of her decision hanging about them both. Would it be more beneficial to have him with them, or should she leave him here in the desert to die?.
