The transfer is the result of his dad's promotion from police officer to detective--which causes the family to move to a new area of the city. Johnny finds ways to win friends as well as startle adversaries by performing magic and applying some investigative techniques learned from his relatives. Part 1 places readers right in the middle of today's school environment. They experience the challenges faced by today's teenagers----from being bullied to just fitting into today's youthful culture. The methods used by Johnny Copper to deal with these challenges are adventuresome, yet practical. The book is both fictional and nonfictional. Although Johnny is a fictional character, he is a composite of many young people today. The challenges he faces are real as well as his magic and detective approaches. Part 2 provides detailed instructions on how Johnny accomplishes his magic in Part 1, from close-up sleight-of-hand to stage illusions---magic which teaches diligence, dexterity, the importance of practice and how to relate to people--all necessary in most of life's endeavors.
