THE GLASS BUTTON begins with a hit-and-run death: an unidentified man is struck by a taxi on a cold and rainy night in 1942 New York City. The medical examiner and the police are treating this as a routine accident since no signs of wrongdoing are evident.
Enter Detective Wil Bartrum, a New York City transplant and the unfortunate one to be assigned to this case. After finding out the body from last night's traffic accident disappeared from the morgue, Bartrum finds a polished glass button. Once thought to be nothing, the glass button leads him to the realization that it is one of many, which will be used to release deadly sarin gas capsules implanted within German agents. Overwhelmed and out of his league, he presses on, overcoming one obstacle after another. This routine accident turns into a wartime operation of Nazi espionage and murder.
