The Blue Cantina: Down the Dark Ladder

In the concluding volume of The Blue Cantina, Anna has sacrificed herself for the good of the Center, the social service agency she had founded serving so called 'wayward' girls and rescuing them from lives of degradation and exploitation. But she cannot save herself. Her enslavement to Miles Devlin is total. His demands become more and more outrageous. And yet, there is something inside poor Anna that revels in her servitude, rejoices in her debasement. Further and further down the dark ladder of utter subservience she descends while, at the same time, Devlin's machinations conceal his main purpose: the takeover of the Center and the plucking, one by one, of the all too vulnerable young women under Anna's charge, destined now for their own embondment at The Blue Cantina.
