In the last five years public opinion polls have shown an increasing number of U.S. citizens who believe their nation to be heading on the wrong direction. It was during his training in public administration that Martin Flowers began his personal journey to discover where this great experiment in self government had gone wrong. The result of this journey is this book: Null and Void: How Partisan Politics, Big Business and Lobbyists Conspired to Destroy the American Way of Life. The premise behind Null and Void is very simple. In the preamble to the United States Constitution the government is tasked with five duties "...establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common Defense, promote the general Welfare and secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity..." The problem is our government is not following through on any of these five requirements. This failure of government has resulted in politicians, businesses, lobbyists and special interest groups who are exploiting the failures to advance their own agendas. We've seen examples of this first hand with the lobbying activities of the banking industry and the damage that has done to our economy and ultimately the greed and general lack of leadership existing at the highest levels of government.
