Beskrivelse
The Muslim Brotherhood has been active in Canada since the first half of the twentieth century, presenting itself and its institutions as the only major actor in Canada who is capable of protecting the rights of Muslims and preserving their cultural and religious identity by creating a common Islamic bond between them that replaces other national bonds. To achieve its vision, the Muslim Brotherhood sought to expand, mobilize and get popular support, working diligently since 1990s to establish mosques, schools, and cultural centers. As a result of these continuous efforts, by early 2000s, the Muslim Brotherhood became almost the only player in the field of Islamic religiuos discourse in Canada and dominated debates over issues that concern Muslim Canadians, such as integration, Islamophobia, extremism and others. The main objective of this paper is to present key institutions and prominent figures of the Muslim Brotherhood in Canada. The paper is divided into two main sections. The first section deals with the most important institutions which are affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood or infiltrated or controlled by it. The second section covers the most prominent figures of the group and their activities that serve its ideology and goals in order to understand the dynamics and goals of the Muslim Brotherhood and the extent of its presence and influence in Canadian society.
