Kara Tolstoy, the second born of identical triplets, asks her mother why she can walk through closed doors when no one else can, and why her eyes change colors when she sees ghosts. Upset, her mother keeps this to herself. Knowing how shocked her mom was, Kara, now twenty, hasn't told anyone else Having passed the bar to be a lawyer, she saw through a window a silk dress so beautiful that she knew she was meant to be a fabric artist. After going to school again, her goal was to work for Worthington Fabrics, owned by Cliff Worthington. On the day of her appointment with him, she asked her cat, Lucy, a ghost, to wish her luck. Carrying her portfolio, she stopped to see friends who were having breakfast at a restaurant. Suddenly pasta was slopped all over her. Whirling around, she saw a man holding a tray from which a bowl of pasta had fallen on the floor. He apologized, asked her to take his card, and said he would pay to have her clothes cleaned. Exploding in fury, she said, "Listen Mr. Noodlehead, I don't want your damn card, and now I can't keep my appointment at Worthington Fabrics." He said, "Keep the appointment and you won't be sorry." Her friends agreed, so she went. After a short wait, the receptionist said, "Mr. Noodlehead will see you now." Kara got the job and fell in love with Cliff, but she sensed something was tormenting him. She knew his wife had died young, but she felt there was more to the story. When finally he told her his daughter was kidnapped and he was doing all he could to find her, Kara threw herself into helping--beginning with summoning her grandparents, who were ghosts, to help find the child. Soon more ghosts came into their lives. One, Don Hennessy, who died just before he was to marry Kara's very close friend, became Kara's and Cliff's best friend. But another, Brenda Kling, who had always loved Cliff and had hoped to marry him, died after doing all she possibly could to destroy his reputation because of Kara. And she vowed she would find his child and kill her.
