"WHAT is the fascination of golf? What makes us love it so?" Most every player has asked himself this question. Many a golf match has been played through a pouring rain. It is not uncommon to see players start out when it is raining hard and they know they are due for the soaking of their lives, yet they continue with enthusiasm unabated. The baseball player scampers for shelter when it commences to sprinkle. No one would ever think of seeing a baseball game in the rain, or even when the grounds were wet. Tennis is never played in the rain. Golfers never stop for even the hardest downpour, and are often followed by a large gallery. ~ Harry Brownlow Martin (1873 - 1965), author of "Golf yarns; the best things about the game of golf" (1913) and President of the New York Newspaper Golf Club (1917)
