This book investigates the historical andcontemporary role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Indoing so, it provides a background on the pre-colonial entry of Africans intothe Americas, as well as African educational traditions, and the struggles foreducation during the period of enslavement in North America. It discusses thesocial, historical and contemporary context that pertains to the development ofBlack education and the formation of HBCUs as a framework for the case study onAfrican American college-bound students perceptions about attending an HBCU.
