Book Three of Land of the Free, Home of the Brave continues the saga of the DeVito family as they attempt to reconcile their Italian heritage with the opportunities and demands presented by the dominant American culture.Mary DeVito was born in America but found herself trying to live between two different worlds: the one belonging to her Italian-American parents, and the other belonging to the American culture of the thirties, forties and fifties.Throughout high school, Mary learns to meet the challenges placed upon her by the beginning of World War II. Later, she decides to attend college to become a teacher, moving to California in the 1950's during the great "Red" scare.Unfortunately, she finds that prejudice and discrimination, fear and paranoia, all silently continue to coexist in the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.
