La elecci n por la virtud chronicles the life of Pope Sixtus V. The plot is based on a series of romanitc conflicts involving nuns, and displays the intricacies of monastic life. It was written in the days when Tirso received harsh criticism from the Church of Spain in the early 17th century. Sixtus V was born to a poor family, he entered the Franciscan order at age 14, was in the Council of Trent as an inquisitorial adviser, was General of the Franciscans, Archbishop of Fermo, Cardinal for fifty years, and reached the papacy in 1585.
