Following on from the events in Babylon, the families of Kate and Sam, and Sam's parents Ian and Mylitta, enlarge, and this leads to discoveries about the magic storage bags that witches and warlocks can carry.
As a result of this, many of the witch or warlock children find their familiars before the time that they would normally expect to do so. However, Amytis, Kate and Sam's daughter, reaches her twelfth birthday, and comes into her magic, without discovering hers, so they are drawn into a hunt following the path indicated by a magical gift given her by Cheryl the ogre.
When their search reaches its conclusion the results are far-reaching, and life will never be the same again for any of them, the dragons imprisoned within the mountains of Earth, or the rest of the magic community.
