In this 2nd Edition, 'Griffith Bowman, Texas Ranger', it is now 1858. Griffith has been a Ranger with the El Paso Detachment for four years, and has proven himself a valuable member. With his wife Miranda, brother Bill Bowman, and Partner Johnny Sears, they continue the balancing act between his two professions of Rangering, and managing the Standing Elk Ranch now running over a thousand head of cattle and horses. There is talk of war. Not the normal, continuing war against the tribes, Mexican rustlers, and Mescalero raiders, but a Civil War between the slave owners and the abolitionists against slavery. It seemed Texas was leaning in favor of slave ownership. It was evident a fight was coming as the Army was withdrawing troops and moving them to the east, leaving the Texas settlers with little or no protection. Outlaws also noticed the depletion of government forces and began stepping up their illegal and murderous ventures against the remaining Sheriffs and Marshals ill-trained and ill-equipped to deal with the rising tide. It was up to the Texas Rangers to pick up the slack.
