Our teeth are a wonder of nature. They are the hardest structures in the human body and withstand severe stresses and strains each and every day, with good oral care for a lifetime. Their special build-up and above all the unique microscopic fine structure of hydroxyapatite and organic components gives them the strength and durability to withstand the many mechanical, chemical and biological influences that affect them daily. This book illustrates these structures to the highest resolution using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the inside of human teeth. Not only does it provide unique insights into the enamel and dentin of healthy permanent and deciduous teeth, but it also shows the effects of caries and erosion and how to prevent these still significant global health problems with biomimetic hydroxyapatite.
