Mediante el estudio de documentos y la dimensi n espectacular de los cuerpos en su desplazamiento hist rico, Cruzados, m rtires y beatos plantea una meditaci n est tica sobre la experiencia vivida de la institucionalidad religiosa de cara a la expansi n mercantilista espa ola y portuguesa sobre Am rica, Asia y frica durante los siglos diecis is y diecisiete. Vivida como caprichoso desfile de signos, m scaras, objetos, razas, lenguas y cuerpos, la experiencia religiosa de lo colonia confronta una materialidad abrumadora que desborda los limites del entendimiento del mundo metropolitano. Para hacer inteligibles las incongruencias de esa experiencia, el misionero vuelve la corporalidad del otro en instrumento privilegiado en que se revela Dios sobre la tierra. En su mas remota minucia, la materialidad se transforma en enigm tico sistema de signos, adivinanza divina. Los resultados de la afiebrada imaginaci n religiosa en s intento por discernir, elaborar y sintetizar esta experiencia constituyen la hermen utica cristiana que es el foco de este estudio. El trabajo postula la existencia de un reportorio corporal que permiti al misionero dar sentido a su experiencia colonial. Construido el religioso llev a cabo la elaboraci n, administraci n y conjuro del desbordamiento emp rico colonial que marcara su experiencia cotidiana, el repertorio es testimonio de una corporalidad que no rehuy las grandes luchas en que su orden e imaginaci n quedaran fijados como monumento a la riqueza de sus recursos, a sus trampas y delirio, a su verg enza y sus claudicaciones. By analyzing a varied body of writing - hagiographies, histories, treatises, and correspondence - in the context of religious colonial culture and European mercantilism, Mario Cesareo shows how Portuguese and Spanish missionaries created a Christian understanding of the colonial process. The material excess of the colonial world, experienced as a capricious parade of signs, masks, objects, races, languages, and bodies subjected to European exploitation, presented a problem of the first magnitude for Christian missionaries. In order to render intelligible the incongruities of the colonial experience, the missionary turned the materiality of the Indian and the black body of the slave into God's privileged instruments for revelation. Materiality, in its remotest minutiae, became understood as an enigmatic system of signs, as a divine riddle to be discerned. The attempts to recognize, elaborate, and synthesize this new experience constitutes the Christian hermeneutics that is the focus of this study. The book posits the existence of a repertoire of stances through which the missionary was able to represent, perform, and theorize the colonial experience. In this social sensibility, the body emerges as a privileged locus for the aesthetic, theoretic, and practical experimentation that allowed the missionary to carry on his utopian ideals within the imperialist workings of European mercantilism.
Written in Spanish, this multidisciplinary analysis opens up a new way of conceptualizing this literature. By bringing to light textual and performative strategies previously undetected by colonial criticism, it questions the way in which colonial discourse and institutions have been traditionally understood and thus allows for a critical rereading of the canon and the categories used for its interpretation.
