Set in the fictional Port City University, the story follows 18-year-old Claire West, a lovable and quirky first-year college student trying to forge new connections as she adapts to her new environment. Accompanying her are close friends Andrew Smith, a no-nonsense jock-like upperclassman and the first person Claire meets, along with Chloe Stewart, Claire's reclusive and studious roommate. Claire is a bisexual who has a crush on Lucy Harthan, the fastidious queen bee of PCU who is also insecure about her status and is secretly a closeted lesbian. Claire's main obstacle manifests in the form of Jack Romanoff, a cocky and comedic frat president whose easygoing attitude makes him one of the proudest and most respected alpha males at the university. Claire also meets her grandfather Dr. Timothy West, a creative writing professor and a renowned writer of the North State who inspires Claire to carry on her family's tradition as a fiction writer herself. As Claire aspires to make the world a better place for everyone around her, she often finds herself struggling with her own inner demons as she navigates her unfamiliar new world.
