Alcatraz sits but a mile and a half off the shore of San Francisco and on a warm summer's day, standing at the end of Muni Pier at Aquatic Park, it seems so close that one could reach out and touch it. On other days, when the fog charges down the center of San Francisco Bay, it becomes invisible. Still on other days, through the Bay's murkiness, Alcatraz appears as a huge ocean liner, making its way to safe harbor in the city. The island is both an icon of the City by the Bay, a part of the tapestry that is San Francisco, and at the same time it remains a secretive place in the middle of the bay - a mystery in plain view. Life-long San Francisco resident and photographer Hayato Tokugawa, always loaded down with a variety of cameras, is a frequent visitor to the island, and no matter how many times he visits Alcatraz, for him there are always new things to see, new questions to be answered, and new mysteries to be solved. In Alcatraz in Light and Shadow, after introducing us to the fascinating history of Alcatraz, from military fortress to federal prison, to park, he takes us on a tour of the island, sharing with us his images and impressions, from the dark mystery of "Chinatown Alley" to the bright gardens that adorn Alcatraz, from the chilling darkness of "Broadway" in the main cellblock to what lies below, recording all that is Alcatraz in its many moods in both light and shadow.
