Marilyn Botterill shows that while science attempts to systematically understand our world and the universe we live in, theology has tried to do the same, but as scientific discoveries began to show how life and the world were different from the teachings of the church, conflict ensued. This conflict escalated as more was discovered that was at variance with the Church's doctrines. Theology renounced science and science denied theology. The concepts accepted by religion are not quantifiable in conventional or classical scientific terms so it has become widely accepted that science and religion are two irreconcilable disciplines.
