Beskrivelse

Sometimes sad, often funny, always a keen observation of the news business as it races to an exciting conclusion, "Night Beat" takes you into the lives of two highly competitive newspaper reporters, each on a quest for page one success and glory. For Mike Rockwell, the night beat reporter at The Cedar City Argus, accolades fall into his lap after he survives an abduction by an alleged cop killer. For Dan Goldberg, who covers the police beat by day, the fame he craves remains elusive until he devises a scheme to create his own news. "Night Beat," though, is about more than Rockwell and Goldberg, more than night and day, more than black ink on white newsprint. "Night Beat" is an examination of morals and corruption, truth and lies, right and wrong, human frailties and faults that challenge the news media. So take a journey into 1986 in Cedar City, Iowa, a relatively quiet community of 200,000 mostly law-abiding citizens who, like you, won't soon forget what they have read. * * * * * Dave Rasdal wrote the first draft of "Night Beat" early in 1987 as a contemporary novel, which is why it centers around the newsroom of a Midwestern daily newspaper in 1986. He completed re-writes in 1989 and 2006, but the manuscript remained on the shelf due to obligations with work and family. The "Night Beat" manuscript was dusted off in mid-2018 as the national press faced more intense scrutiny and criticism due to the proliferation of social media and accusations by the current administration that it produced "fake news." Except for re-arranging some of the chapters, polishing the prose and revising the ending, "Night Beat" remains true to the original manuscript. Even though that means "Night Beat" takes place more than 30 years ago, its intent is the same - to show that, no matter the size of the city, people have always had a certain hatred for the media, reporting news can be a tough job fraught with tough decisions, and news gatherers are only human, sometimes corrupted by their own egos.
