Whilst people have always migrated, they so often are misunderstood and seen as a threat. The Empire days are overlooked when thousands invaded underdeveloped countries, clearing the land of indigenous people. After setting out to record the family's history for the grandchildren, I became absorbed in the migration experiences of the five down the generations, plus my own in 1960. Starting with 2 families leaving Britain to live in South Africa in 1820, followed by 3 others at later dates and finally my return to Britain after Sharpeville. These made me curious about the psychological effects of leaving kith and kin and the trials and tribulations they encountered. The trauma of a couple were seen to be too great, whilst others prospered.Migrants become displaced, aliens, not knowing where they belong. Their stories need to be heard, as their descendants need to know what they inherited from their forefathers.
