What if the legendary giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his pet blue ox Babe really did exist? Young Billy Bunyan and his disabled brother Hap are determined to find out with unexpected consequences that will change their broken family's future forever. A legend comes to life in this bittersweet look at what happens to the bonds of a modern-day Wisconsin family when they revive their giant uncle and his pet ox Babe after 170 years of hibernation. The wilderness Paul knew is long gone. Forests and wildlife have been replaced by a hostile landscape of fenced farms, cluttered concrete highways, and wired power grids. Once the "cult of celebrity" wears off for the giants, the Bunyans face an onslaught of negative public opinion and government regulations. They become social outcasts until the giants are needed in an ecological emergency. In a race against time, Paul Bunyan and his giant ox prove their worth when the marvels of modern technology fail.
