Famous for his 1875 poem 'Invictus', the late Victorian author W. E. Henley was an influential poet, critic and editor, whose verses demonstrate some of the earliest examples of free verse in English literature. His works are noted for their experimental approach to form, abrasive narrative shifts and internal monologue, while at times tackling controversial subject matter. A fixture of London literary circles, the one-legged Henley served as the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Long John Silver. He was also a gifted critic, whose 'Views and Reviews' offers a succinct, informed and entertaining evaluation of some of the nineteenth century's most cherished authors.
