It's 1958 and 18 year old Lance finds his life overflowing with unexpected adventure. To earn money for college in the fall, he takes a summer job on a Southeastern Alaskan Island as a logger. Launched into manhood, his life's lessons begin. The summer ends with new friendships formed and encounters with danger survived. He returns to a small Catholic College in the rural town of Mt. Angel, Oregon. In college he experiences the joy of young love and the financial pain of trying to pay for his college tuition. Economics win the battle. In 1958 a young man was either in college or the draft would scoop him up. Deciding that he wasn't interested in carrying an army rifle in some South East Asian jungle with people shooting at him, he joins the U.S. Navy.
