This handbook explores the role of language, linguistics and communication in effective crisis and disaster management in the sub-Saharan context, arguing that deliberate language and communication practices are a key tool for organisations and institutions to manage and survive. The authors examine debates, trends and insights relating to crisis and disaster management communication in all types of institutions, including private and public sector organisations, formal and informal sector organisations, governmental and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), political parties as well as social movements and at both macro and micro level. It covers themes including linguistic issues in crisis and disaster management; communication and (effective) disaster preparedness; the role of social and new media; health communication in crisis situations; politics and ethics before, during and after crises and disasters; and models and strategies of planning, managing and responding to a disaster. The handbook will be a key resource for universities, colleges and organisations in the region and beyond, acting as a resource for academics, students and practitioners in subject areas such as applied linguistics, language policy and planning, political and media communication, brand communication, social and digital media.
