"The Lost Daughter" by Elena Ferrante is the story of Leda, a middle-aged divorced mother of two, who is forced to confront her unsettled past and the complicated nature of motherhood.
Leda, a dedicated English teacher, finds herself alone for the first time in years. Her daughters are to stay with their father in Canada, which Leda is certain will make her feel lonely and lost. When these feelings never arrive and Leda instead feels strangely liberated, she decides to go on holiday rather than confront that sensation. She is enjoying the quiet beauty of the coast of Southern Italy, when a chance encounter with a young family force her down memory lane.
