Beskrivelse
Syloti Sillok is a book about various Sylheti proverbs, idioms, and sayings that are used in everyday life by Sylhetis. In particular, the older generations were almost unable to go through a day without using some of these phrases. Unfortunately, they have not been well documented, and centuries of tradition and literary heritage are at risk of being lost. This book aims to capture some of these proverbs, idioms, and sayings, which have been collected from various sources and written in the actual Syloti-Nagri script, a script that is becoming extinct due to a lack of official use and a lack of formal government institutions teaching it.
At the beginning of the book, the Sylheti-Nagri alphabet and numbers are provided for the reader's benefit, along with pronunciation or transliteration in Eastern-Nagari script (also known as Bengali or Bangla script) and Roman Script or English, along with translations in English.
Some of these proverbs, idioms, and sayings are mind-blowing, amusing, and true in nature, but a few can also be about adult life and the bitter truth, which some readers may find offensive. The author has included these phrases in their original form, as they have been used for centuries, generation after generation, specifically before the decline of the Sylheti language, which started with the partition of India and Pakistan and continued with the independence of Bangladesh and the Banglanisation of the nation. Be warned, some of these proverbs and idioms are quite cheeky and will definitely bring a smile to your face with their great Sylheti humour.
