Sumo is an indigenous Japanese martial art and traditional recreation with its roots in Japan. Two competitors, referred to as "rikishi," attempt to dislodge one another from a circular ring (dohyo) or make contact with the ground using any object besides the soles of their feet.
Sumo wrestling is an integral part of Japanese culture and has a lengthy history in Japan. Departing from ancient religious practices, it is frequently linked to Shinto rituals. Sumo wrestlers, referred to as "rikishi," adhere to a hierarchical structure and rigorous training regimens within sumo compounds, where they cohabit and compete.
Sumo tournaments, referred to as "basho," are conducted on an annual basis in diverse Japanese cities. Over the course of fifteen days, wrestlers compete in matches to determine the champion of each basho. With tournaments being conducted in other nations and an increasing number of non-Japanese wrestlers competing professionally in Japan's top sumo divisions, sumo has also gained international popularity.
