"A well-written account about a young man's mistake and the threat of dire consequences. Our verdict: Get it."
-- Kirkus Reviews
"Loved it! Along the lines of 'On the Road' and less depressing than 'Into the Wild'. Gorman's writing is clear and honest!" -- Victoria Irwin - Discovery
Yearning for adventure and seeking to escape problems at home, in 1969 naïve American teenager Paul Gorman left his home in the suburbs. With just several hundred dollars in his pocket and blind determination he set out hitchhiking across the U.S. bound for Europe. After a series of frightening experiences on the road, he arrives there hoping to hook-up with an old high school girlfriend - who was a German exchange student. Chilled by the girl's reception and the frigid weather, he heads south searching out sunny beaches and cheap prices. Unfortunately, Gorman settles in Spanish dictator Francisco Franco's Canary Islands. Grifting the streets, struggling to survive, his troubles explode and so does the suspense and intrigue.
Told with flair and sparkling with youthfulness, Gorman's journey is the dramatic true story of a young man searching for adventure, his place in the world, and how the mistake he made transformed him.
