Puppy care
Puppies need love, attention, exercise, food, water, and shelter. A puppy's first six months of life are critical for proper socialization, training, and physical development. If you have never raised a puppy before, here are some tips to help you get started.
2. Crate Training
Crate training is a great way to teach your puppy good house manners. When crate-training your puppy, place him in his crate at night while you're sleeping. Then, the next morning, let him out of the crate to relieve himself. After he goes, praise him lavishly and give him a treat. Repeat this routine each day until your puppy starts to recognize the difference between going outside and coming back inside.
3. Socializing
Socializing your puppy means exposing him to many different people, places, and things. Take him to parks, dog runs, and local pet stores. Puppies thrive on human interaction, so don't hesitate to take him everywhere you go.
4. Exercise
Exercise is just as important as diet and nutrition. Puppies should be taken on daily walks around the neighborhood. Make sure they always wear their identification tags and carry their vaccination records.
5. Food
Feeding your puppy is fun! Puppies eat small meals throughout the day. You may want to start feeding them once a day at about 6 weeks old, then twice a day at 10 weeks old, and finally three times a day at 12 weeks old. Puppies' stomachs are not ready for solids until after 16 weeks of age, so make sure to wait until then to introduce solid foods.
6. Water
Your puppy needs plenty of fresh, clean drinking water. Always keep a bowl of water nearby and change its water frequently. Never leave your puppy alone in a hot car.
7. Shelter
Shelter is the last thing you'll think about when raising puppies, but it's probably the most important. Puppies need protection from the elements, especially cold weather. Keep your puppy indoors during winter months.
