Mount Mazama exploded 7,700 years ago, shooting a giant pillar of ash and pumice thirty miles high. The mountain collapsed in on itself, and over the centuries the red-hot volcano cooled and filled with pure snow and rain, creating one of the clearest, deepest lakes in the world.
