Beskrivelse

Climate changeClimate change is due to human activity. It is the most significant threat to the human species and every other living organism.

What is climate change? What is causing it? How is it affecting plants and animals? How are humans affected by it? We created this book to answer these questions simply and clearly.

10 chapters:

1: What is climate change?

2: Polar ice melt & thawing permafrost

3: Extreme weather events

4: Deforestation and agriculture

5: Fossil fuel energy - coal, oil, and natural gas.

6: Species and biodiversity loss

7: Climate migrants

8: Four ecosystems at risk

9: Plastic waste

10: What can one person do?

Quizzes and crosswords reinforce the text and keep the reader engaged and interested.

The book begins by explaining what climate change is and what is causing it. We then explain what is causing polar ice melt and thawing permafrost and we describe some of the effects of these processes. We describe extreme weather events which are very likely caused by climate change. We explain how deforestation and agriculture are adding to the greenhouse effect which fuels climate change. We explain what fossil fuel energy is and we explain the link between burning these non-renewable energy sources and climate change. We describe how climate change is affecting animal and plant habitats and behaviour and how this is causing some species to be at risk of extinction. A new term has entered our vocabulary: 'Climate migrants'. These are people who are forced to leave their homes due to climate change. We explain how and why this is happening. We describe four large ecosystems that are at immediate risk: Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Amazon Rainforest, the Siberian Taiga Forest, and China's Minqin County. We explain that plastic waste persists. Unlike carbon, there is almost nothing we can do to remove the plastic waste from the environment. If we don't stop pouring plastic waste into the oceans, soon there will be more plastic waste in the ocean than marine life. What can one person do? We can live more simply so more can simply live. We can consume less by reusing, recycling, or repairing what we already have. We can use less energy. We can walk or ride bicycles instead of using cars. And we can plant trees to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and so reduce the greenhouse effect.
