Der »Neue Mensch« und das »Neue Sehen« waren die Leitbegriffe der frühen sowjetischen Avantgarde - und der »Kulturfilm« jene Spezies des neuartigen Mediums Kino, in der das große sozialanthropologische Experiment als Wahrnehmungsumsturz umgesetzt werden sollte. Die Gattung florierte in der Sowjetunion nur kurze Zeit, dafür aber so intensiv und kreativ wie nirgendwo sonst: ob im populär-wissenschaftlicher oder ethnographischer Film, ob im Zeichen der Erziehung zur Sozialhygiene oder als Projekt biopolitischer Umerziehung, ob als Propaganda für Elektrifizierung oder als Agitation zum Glück.
Basierend auf ausgedehnten Archivrecherchen fördert diese Pionierarbeit mehr als 140 Film-Kleinode zu Tage - animierte, inszenierte, dokumentarische; Plakat-Kino, Pamphlete, Laborstudien - methodisch und filmeditorisch innovativ visualisiert. Das revolutionäre Projekt der Kino-UdSSR als unentdeckte Materialkultur - jenseits großer Namen, aber durchaus im Geiste des größten Kulturfilmers: Dziga Vertov.

The "New Man" and the "New Vision" were the central concepts of the early Soviet avant-garde-and the "cultural film" was the form the new medium of cinema was to take: in it, the great experiment in social anthropology was to be put into practice as a perceptual revolution. The genre only flourished for a short period in the Soviet Union, but it did so with more intensity and creativity than anywhere else: in popular scientific or ethnographic films; under the banner of education in social hygiene or as a project geared to biopolitical re-education; or as propaganda for electrification or as agitprop for happiness.
Underpinned by extensive archival research, this pioneering work has brought to light more than 140 cinematic gems-animation, drama, and documentary works (including pamphlets, and lab studies), given innovative visual form in terms of their technical approach and editing. The book presents the revolutionary project of Soviet cinema as an undiscovered material culture-it does not feature any major names but emphatically embraces the spirit of the supreme cultural film-maker, Dziga Vertov.
