AUTHOR BIOThe author received his Ph.D. from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He held various architecture leadership positions at two of the world's largest telecommunication equipment makers, some startup companies, and a mid-sized international corporation. He played a pivotal role in the design and development of numerous products in HPC, server virtualization, and telecommunication. His extensive work in telecommunication spanned the areas of electrical and optical, as well as wireless and wireline.

The author has traveled frequently around the globe, partly for pleasure but mostly for providing technical guidance to product development at his companies' R&D sites in North America, Europe, and Asia.

The author has retired from the hi-tech industry and now lives in Canada.

EXCERPTThe BlackBerry cellphone on the bedside table all of a sudden sprang to life, ringing, vibrating and blinking. The ringer was set to low but it sounded like the loud pealing of a fire alarm at this hour in the dead quietness of the bedroom. Awoken, trying to open his bleary eyes, he found his eyelids heavy. The ringing continued. Berry O'Brian now realized it was his beloved BlackBerry. He fumbled for it.

He had been the world's most loyal BlackBerry user. Upon taking the presidency, his security detail had taken away his BlackBerry for security reasons. No President preceding his presidency ever had a smartphone. Why should he? It was for national security. He was lost, lost in not having electronic connections through the BlackBerry he had been relying on day in and day out for over ten years. It was like a boy having his game console taken away. He must get it back. He fought a vigorous battle, not any less furious than against his political foes, the Republicans.

O'Brian eventually won. RIM, the maker of BlackBerry, made him a special BlackBerry device together with the NSA, the National Security Agency. This special BlackBerry addressed all the security concerns. He could now communicate once again with people through his BlackBerry anytime, anywhere, as he so chose. Well, sort of... He could email or call only a very small restricted number of pre-approved persons. He had a new email address and phone number nobody outside this prerogative circle knew about or could reach. Beyond that, there was not much he could do with it. Certainly, Angry Birds did not make the cut onto this BlackBerry. It's all for national security. He earned himself the epithet, "BlackBerry", in his adamant and perseverative pursuit for keeping a BlackBerry.
