Attention is again cal... led to the close analogy existing between narcotine and hydrastine, the second alkaloid of Hydrastis cana clensis. A short time ago Freund and Will stated that both bases, when treated in hydrochloric acid solutions with potassium pera manganate, yield opianic acid, and that the oxidation products obtained from them by the action of nitric acid are likewise identical (year-book, 1887, p. E. Schmidt now reports that he has observed a similar identity of decomposition products on effecting the oxidation of these bases in alkaline instead of acid solutions. All attempts, however, to convert hydrastine into narcotine, or rice versé, have so far proved unsuccessful.
