The Know. There is a twofold knowledge of things. I. A fpeculative knowledge; when we have fome barren notions of things in our head or brain fome dry and faplefs fpeculations of them, without any further benefit. 2. An afi'eétive or pratitical knowledge; fuch a knowledge as a¿'eéts the heart, and in¿uenceth the life and praé'tice. This is what is here promifed, called an heart to know God. The former is a head knowledge; this is a heart knowledge.

The objeé't, God, tlmt be tbs Lord. God is the fu preme object of knowledge, and fuch as infinitely tranfeends the reach and capacity of all created under¿andings; fo that he can be perfeftly known only by himfelf. Yet there is a knowledge of God unto falvation attainable, which is here promifed. God is not here to be confidered abfolutely, bitt in relation to fome fpeeial revelation of himfelf. There is a knowledge of God as God, by the light of nature; but this is not here intended nor can it be the fubjeét of any gracious promife, feeing it is common to all men; but God 15 to be confidered here, as revealed in Chril'ti So that the knowledge here promifed, is a knowledge of God in Chril't, of God in covenant, of God as he hath revealed himfelf and his mind and will in the holy fcriptures. Then it is added, 77ml! Iam the Lord (jehovah). This name denotes the fell-exil'tence of God To know him as he is jehovah, is to know him as the eternal, unchangeable, and inde pendent Being, that hath his being in and of himfelf, and is the fountain and caufe of all other beings, and gives a being to his decrees, purpofes, and promifes.
