Malmsey was also called malvoisie, after Napoli di Malvasia or Monemvasia, in southern Greece, from which town it was shipped to the ports of western Europe. In the eleventh century it was already popular, an... d in the fourteenth century its manufacture was begun in Spain. The kind of grape, from which malmsey was originally made, is known as the malmsey grape.
