The Rise of the Research University
- A Sourcebook
How do we understand the modern-day American university? As many know, it grew out of the 19th century German university, both real and imagined, especially the first American research universities such as Chicago, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins, and later a reinvented Harvard and public universities such as Michigan and California. In this volume, we have the early textual formulations of the research university, which are important for understanding the historical course of the university, as well as for engaging with the present-day debate about the university. Many of these crucial sources are hard to come by, and most of the classic German writings on the university are being made available here in good translations for the first time. The Rise of the Research University makes easily available a series of seminal writings on the university and make those writings more accessible to students and a general audience by framing them historically. The editors include a marvelous general introduction, as well as a contextualizing mini-essay to introduce every primary source. All of the translations in the book are new, and some will stand as the first English translation of a key source.
