Excerpt from The Northern Invasion of October 1780: A Series of Papers Relating to the Expeditions From Canada Under Sir John Johnson and Others Against the Frontiers of New York Which Were Supposed to Have Connection With Arnold's Treason
If we bear in mind that the hostile ... parties who infested this region were often made up of those who had been former inhabitants of the valley, or at least were always led by those who had been forced from their homes by the events of the war, and were in¿amed with the fiercest revenge against their former neighbors, whom they often found enjoying the property from which they had been driven, we may well infer that this partizan warfare would be active, unrelenting and cruel.
