There are, it is said, in Walker's Dictionary, about words, in Todd's Johnson, and in Webster's Quarto,: If w... e omit obsolete words, and the thousands of the technical and scientific, which the pro gress of art and science has introduced during the last fifty years, and Of which 'four thousand are found in Webster's work, there will remain some ten thousand woans that form the staple of the language of com mon life - such as appear in the ordinary Histories, Biographies, and works of general literature of our day. These, in their various derivative and composite forms; make up the bulk of our language, and ought to be included in the Spelling Book.
