The Goums 1941-1945

The Goums-a company consisting of goumiers who were Moroccan soldiers in the French Army-were created in 1911 during the conquest of Morocco as a guerrilla police force. It was only after the pacification of the country that they were used for the first time as a regular unit, and participated in the 1940 campaign.After the armistice, nearly 20,000 goumiers were secretly trained to fight in a European manner. The Tabors (grouping of several Goums) participated in the in the 1943 Tunisia Campaign, and at the request of the Patton, in the invasion of Sicily.
