The Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) and its derivatives are popular in many applications, such as blind equalization, blind source separation, and blind beamforming. The unique characteristic of the CMA is that a training sequence is not required, thereby making it ideal for blind signal processing applications. Understanding the basics of the CMA is very important for practicing engineers, researchers, and students in electrical engineering. The theoretical analysis of the CMA presented in this Synthesis Lecture will enhance understanding and, through simulation examples, provide a virtual testbed for gaining insight into the operating characteristics of this important signal processing tool and the impact of various algorithm parameters. All of the MATLAB code used in these simulations is provided. Numerous applications are given to illustrate the importance of the CMA in modern communication systems.
