The Phoenix was the symbol of the solar year, but more partien larly of the great years, or cycles. It is surprising that so judiei ous a writer as Tacitus should have said, that the phoenix really had been occasionally seen in Egypt. He has, however, mentioned one tradition, of which I must take notice.
