Bibliotekernes beskrivelse
The Cistercian order was one of the most successful of the monastic orders that emerged in Europe in the late eleventh century and it continues to function to this day. The origins of the orders were connected to the reform ideas of the time, which centred on poverty and pious communal life of the monks. The first hundred years of the order's existence were also marked by the development of a novel 'management system across the entire network, as well as written rules and regulations governing internal life of the communities, their contacts with outside world and each other. This proved a highly effective model, although by splits and schisms in the church, it was divided along national lines by the 15th century. In contrast to previous types of monastic organisation, the Cistercians were innovative in the way in which they responded to the lay world. They did not cut themselves off from wider society, but engaged with it in a highly selective manner to their own advantage. One of the areas traditionally singled out by historians is their economic innovativeness and efficiency, trading for high profit on the international markets. Their architecture was also original and the model of piety introduced and practised by the Cistercians ensured that it remains inspirational today. This is the first English-language survey of the Cistercian order, and brings together a wealth of research and documentary evidence to create a fuller picture for students of medieval history.
