"The Blade Itself" is the first novel in Joe Abercrombies dark and twisted The First Law series.

In "The Blade Itself" we are introduced to Joe Abercrombies four characters:

The infamous barbarian Logen Ninefingers, who finally has run out of his luck and now are close to death. A death that will be celebrated by his many enemies.

The vain and shallow nobleman Captain Jezal dan Luthar, just want to cheat his friends in card games and dream of glory in the fencing circle. But the bloody war from battlefields of the frozen North is coming his way.

Inquisitor Glokta is a bitter cripple turned torturer after he once was a fencing champion. Now he hates everyone. His way to the corrupt heart of the government is clear if he can survive long enough. Bayaz is a bald and old wizard with a terrible temper and is soon to make the lives of Logen, Jezal, and Glokta miserable!
