Excerpt from Telliamed, or the World Explain'd: Containing Discourses Between an Indian Philospher and a Missionary, on the Diminution of the Sea, the Formation of the Earth, the Origin of Men and Animals
The nature and origin of our Globe have not been f0 well treated of by ... any other author; with refpe€t to its origin, among the various opinions, which in all ages have divided mankind, all have agreed, that there was a period in which the world began to be t inhabited whether it was from eternity, as fome of the ancient philofophers maintained, or whether it began to exill in time, as reafon and religion induce us to believe this. The human iudgment has not as yet penetrated in to. Religion in l'ome, in others the prejudice of education, and in all, the obfcurity of the fab jec'c, hinder them from carrying their refearches farther. If Tome ancient philofophers, and even learned nations, have pretended to explain the manner in which this univerfe was formed, the ages in which they lived have feen that they only fpread fables and romances under their molt fubtile lyl'tems, and molt myfterious allegories.
