Excerpt from Sketches of Switzerland, Vol. 1 of 2
The vacuum in the narrative, and the abrupt manner in which it is laid before the reader, demand a word of explanation. The year 1828 was commenced in Paris. Thence the writer went early to England; re turning, however, to Fra... nce, in June, by the way of Holland and Belgium. At Paris, after this return, the narrative of Part I. Commences; terminating at Milan. The rest of the year 1828, and those of 1829, 1830, and 1831, with part of that of 1832, were passed between Italy, (where the writer remained nearly two years,) Germany, Belgium, and France. The narra tive in Part II. Reco mmences at Paris, after which it tells its own tale, up to' a time when all the interest of the reader in the subject will most probably cease.
