Excerpt from Selected Poems of Pierre De Ronsard
The twelve years between 1550 and 1562 may be said to constitute the middle period of Ronsard's poetical activity. He produced an enormous quantity of verse his supremacy was universally acknowledged; he enjoyed the intimate pa... tronage of the great and the happy camaraderie that exists between poets; he was the lover - the rather literary lover - of several women, and his life was delight fully divided between the splendours of Blois and the tranquil haunts of his beloved Vendomois. He wrote much that was good, much that was pedantic, and very little that was vital and imperishable. It seemed as if he was prepared to be contented for the rest of his life with charming variations on several original themes, though he continued to experiment in new forms.
